The idea of cause and effect sounds reasonable but sometimes it’s nearly impossible for us to identify the cause of a problem we face. We tend to focus on symptoms instead of the cause. A good example most of us might know is when we are fighting a cold: We take pills which makes usRunning feel more easy and comfortable, pills that take away the pain - but do not cure our illness. We are still sick. But hey, we’re runners and not doctors, so let’s change the subject. (Even though we think running might be a good medicine for many problems we are facing).

 

 

 

Many running shoes nowadays come with excessive cushioning and support. Runners have been told for decades that more cushioning and supportive elements in running shoes help our feet to stay healthy and that it is needed to avoid running related injuries such as Runners Knees, Achilles Tendinitis, Hamstring Issues, Plantar Fasciitis, Shin Splints, Stress Fracture, etc. However, if we take a closer look at injury rates over the last decades we won't see any improvement at all.

Distance Running

Basically runners tend to get injured in 2020 as often as in 1980. Let’s ask the question: Do max-cushioned running shoes with excessive support and motion control elements help us to get rid of running related injuries, or are we only fighting the pain when wearing those shoes?

The cause for most of our running injuries is linked to our sedentary lifestyle. We have stopped using our body the way we were meant to. Poor posture due to an unbalanced muscle composition and limited joint mobility lead to an unnatural and dysfunctional running form. In most cases, this is the reason for running related injuries. However, many runners try to fix these problems by using highly cushioned and excessively supportive running shoes, which means nothing else than fighting the pain but not the cause for their injury. 

In order to stay healthy and pain free in a long term we need to understand the cause for most running related injuries: It is necessary to relearn how to move our body in a natural way. We have to break out of the vicious circle of running related injuries which make us buy softer and/or more structured running shoes which lead to the next running related injury.
